7 YEARS TO 7 SECONDS

7 YEARS TO 7 SECONDS

Many will remember, before the maturity of Google & Apple - As recently as 2004, Art submissions were made by mail accompanied with negatives ("film" - for those born in Google Era) of the artwork. The entire turnaround process of submission, acceptance and eventual showing of the artist could take between 3-7 years by a "reputed" gallery, IF an artists' work was accepted.

That too the showing would be ONCE.

Artists would need to keep the fingers crossed to sell. If they sold, great - If not - it would be back to looking out for the next exhibit since the same gallery or any other in the vicinity would not show their art again.

The Process

An emerging Artist MAY get 2 shows in an entire lifetime in a premier city.

Create Work
Identify Galleries
Create Gallery Quality Submissions
Send Submissions by mail
Busy Galleries usually take a minimum of 3-4 months to review
Get work reviewed
Get accepted or get denied
Due to minimal galleries in premier cities the wait is 3-5 or even 7 years

If Accepted

Create work
Wait 3-5 years
Insurance
Ship
Spend of stay & travel for the show
Look for other opportunities meanwhile

In addition - If an Artist spends all the time to look for an Exhibit - When do they create & in what state of mind do they create in ?

Fast Forward to 2014

GOOGLE & APPLE changed that forever

Since time immemorial artisans had to depend on themselves or their neighborhood “medici” (Businessman patron) to promote them, with no other way to reach beyond their immediate area of existence.

Silicon Valley changed that with the advent of Google in 1998.  Artists finally had a window to the entire globe from their back yards and on their fingertips.
